Sécure
28 Dorado Before the Rain
Week 15 began at Sécure with one of those fishing days that immediately changes the expectations for everything that follows.
Derek Hutton returned for his second visit, hosting six anglers on their first trip to the lodge.
On Day 1 alone, the group landed 28 dorado, including a 26-pound female, along with two large pacú weighing 16 and 18 pounds.
Then, that same night, the jungle reminded us exactly where we were.
Heavy rain transformed the river, raising levels and reducing visibility until fly-fishing opportunities temporarily disappeared.
But the week wasn’t finished.
From midweek onward, conditions gradually improved, and what had looked like an interrupted trip developed into a second chapter filled with strong fishing, memorable catches, and time shared with the Tsimane guides.

Apart from the opening day, the week was marked by a cold and rainy weather system. Even after the precipitation stopped, temperatures remained unusually cool, well below what we normally expect at this stage of the season. The change was dramatic compared with the conditions that had produced such an explosive first day.
The heavy rain at the beginning of the week first interrupted and then significantly slowed fishing opportunities. High, dirty water temporarily removed many of the situations we had been enjoying.
But the river progressively recovered. As the week advanced, fishing opportunities returned both on the Sécure itself and within the more intimate waters of the tributaries, allowing the group to close the trip with another strong chapter.
Catch of the Week
26 Pounds on Day One
On the very first day, fishing far upstream on the Sécure, Derek connected with a massive 26-pound female dorado.
It came during a remarkable opening session in which the group would eventually account for 28 dorado and two large pacú.
Even among those numbers, Derek’s fish stood apart.
A trophy-sized dorado from the upper river and an immediate demonstration of the potential these waters can reveal when conditions align.
Memorable Moments
Fishing Through the Curtain
The most memorable moments of Week 15 weren’t limited to the opening day’s numbers.
When the rain arrived, the group kept fishing.
Their persistence and attitude through difficult conditions became part of the story, including the capture of two large pacú beneath a curtain of rain.
Alongside those moments came something equally important to the week: the close connection developed with the Tsimane guides.
Together, those experiences defined a trip that moved from extraordinary abundance to difficult conditions, and then back toward productive water again.
The Week at Sécure
Twenty-eight dorado and two large pacú on Day 1 would have been enough to define almost any week.
Instead, Week 15 became a story of two very different rivers: one at its most generous, and another transformed overnight by rain.
The group experienced both.
