Sécure
From Floodwater to the Fish of the Season
Sometimes, writing a Fishing Report is a challenge in itself.
Our days are shaped by a constant interaction between living creatures and an environment that never stops changing. Weather, water, fish, light, movement. Each day produces a sequence of moments that can never be repeated in exactly the same way, and trying to capture all of that in words is never simple.
And then there are weeks that almost write themselves.
Week 14 was one of them.
Three couples from the United States experienced a week that began with intense heat, was interrupted by a massive rise of nearly one meter in the Sécure, and then progressively rebuilt itself into something extraordinary.
Fishing was completely shut down for an entire day. Yet only a few days later, Erik would land the largest dorado brought to the bank at Sécure this season, a massive female estimated between 28 and 30 pounds.
And that was only one of several moments that made this week difficult to contain within a single report.
6 Erik, Lori, Michael, Amy, Lance & Kamaya (United States). Erik, Michael and Amy on their second visit.
The week welcomed us with intense heat. That changed dramatically during the early hours of Sunday, when heavy rain arrived and brought a marked drop in temperature, both in the air and in the water. From midweek onward, temperatures began climbing again, gradually returning warmth to the system as the week progressed.
A massive rain event upstream transformed the river during the early hours of the second fishing day. The Sécure rose by approximately one meter, affecting both the main river and its tributaries and completely eliminating any realistic opportunity to fish for an entire day.
By Day 3, however, the river was already dropping quickly. Visibility was still limited, but the fishing began producing again, with numerous dorado of different sizes coming to the fly. From there, conditions continued improving until the week reached its peak in clear water, culminating in the largest dorado landed at Sécure this season.

The Biggest Dorado of the Season
Midway through the final day, Erik, a great angler in his second visit to Sécure, was fishing the pristine waters of the Upper Sécure when he connected with a truly exceptional female dorado.
The fish measured 93 x 58 centimeters and was estimated between 28 and 30 pounds, making it the largest dorado brought to the bank at Sécure this season.
There is something difficult to reconcile about seeing a fish of that scale emerge from water that appears almost too small to contain it.
And perhaps that contradiction is precisely what makes the Upper Sécure so compelling: enormous predators inhabiting intimate, crystalline water where their presence seems almost impossible until the moment they appear.
Memorable Moments
A Day Through Lori’s Eyes
Lori returned from a day on the Maniquicito carrying something different.
A deeply sensitive photographer, she experienced the tributary with an emotional connection and gratitude that went well beyond simply documenting the fishing.
The result was a collection of some of the most remarkable photographs produced at Sécure this season, capturing not only fish, but the atmosphere of the place itself.
One Cast into the Hunt
In low, completely clear water, Amy encountered a small group of dorado patrolling in hunting mode.
The opportunity required precision.
A tight, accurate cast placed the streamer exactly where it needed to be, intercepting a 16-pound dorado and producing one of the week’s most visual and iconic captures.
Kamaya’s 20-Pound Welcome
On her first visit to Sécure, Kamaya found a fish she will not easily forget.
Fishing upstream, not far from the lodge, she connected with a 20-pound female dorado, sealing her first encounter with these waters with one of the strongest catches of the week.
The Week at Sécure
One meter of rising water. One full day without fishing. Then a fast recovery, clear water, multiple quality dorado, and finally the largest fish landed here this season.
Week 14 was a reminder of how quickly Sécure can transform, and how much can still happen once the river begins to give something back.
