Pluma
A Mouse in Sight
Week 14 brought a lively international group to Pluma, with anglers from all over the world.
Helmut Zaderer led a group of eight anglers, and four more joined on their own: Petr, Chris, David, and Piers Smart, a friend of the house.
The week began under difficult conditions, with rain, cold weather, high water, and very limited visibility. But as levels dropped and temperatures improved, the river progressively came back into shape.
Among the highlights was one particularly visual encounter: Helmut presenting a mouse pattern to a dorado he could see, producing one of the defining surface takes of the week.
Several other large dorado, along with yatorana and pacú, added variety as conditions improved.
13 Christoph, Marco, Julian & Stephan (Germany); Reed, Christopher Walsh, David & Chris Cartwright (United States); Petr (Russia); Vaidas (Lithuania); Helmut & Roman (Austria); Piers (United Kingdom).
The week began with rain and cold temperatures before conditions gradually improved. As the weather stabilized, temperatures rose and the river began moving toward a more favorable range.
Pluma started the week very high and very turbid. As the days progressed, levels dropped and temperatures improved, eventually giving the group considerably better fishing conditions toward the end of the week.
Catch of the Week
A Mouse, a Visible Fish
Helmut’s standout fish came in one of the most exciting ways possible.
He spotted the dorado first.
Then came the presentation.
Using a mouse pattern on the surface, Helmut was able to place the fly to a visible fish and watch the entire encounter unfold.
A surface take is always memorable. Seeing the fish before making the cast adds another level entirely.
Memorable Moments
Dorado, Yatorana and Pacú
As the river improved, the week produced several memorable large dorado, along with yatorana and pacú. Piers landed one of those dorado, and Helmut added a giant pacú to his week.
The mix of species added variety to a trip that had started under difficult water conditions and finished with a much more productive river.
The Week at Pluma
Week 14 began with high, cold and turbid water, but conditions progressively improved.
By the end of the week, the river had better levels, warmer temperatures and renewed fishing opportunities, including large dorado and surface action.
