Too Big for the Water
This week, Sécure welcomed six first-time guests from the United States, all eager to experience one of the most fascinating contradictions in jungle fly fishing: pursuing a freshwater species whose behavior can demand very different ways of thinking and fishing.
At times, dorado can evoke the caution of an almost impossible brown trout. Seconds later, the same fish can charge with the aggression of a giant trevally or explode into a chaotic feeding frenzy in water so shallow it seems barely deep enough to hold them.
Week 12 offered glimpses of that entire spectrum.
In the clear, intimate waters of the Upper Sécure, Preston landed a beautiful 16-pound female dorado from water that seemed almost too small for a fish of that size. And on the final afternoon, wind covered the surface of El Cañón with leaves, flowers, and insects, creating an opportunity for Jared and Preston to connect with three large pacú.
But the week also unfolded through another kind of encounter.
Jared and Preston brought with them a deep anthropological interest and an unusual knowledge of the Amazon and the cultures that inhabit it. That curiosity helped create an atmosphere of connection, empathy, and deep conversation, the kind of experience that can leave you with the feeling of having somehow dived beneath the surface of the trip itself, caught a glimpse of the very essence of these forests, and returned home carrying the greatest trophy of all.
One of those catches that simply cannot be measured.

We began the week under generally cool conditions, both in the air and in the water. As the days passed, temperatures gradually shifted toward warmer and more temperate conditions. By the end of the week, clear skies and warmer days had settled over Sécure, creating a climate very much in line with this stage of the season.
This week gave us clear water throughout the entire system, with good levels in both the tributaries and the main river. Those stable conditions allowed us to fish very different environments over the course of the week, from the intimate upper reaches to the deeper, quieter waters farther downstream.

Too Big for the Water
Fishing low, clear water in the Upper Sécure, Preston encountered one of the contrasts that makes this place so difficult to forget.
A beautiful 16-pound female dorado came from water that, at first glance, seemed almost too small to hold a fish of that size.
It is a recurring contradiction here: substantial dorado occupying intimate water, where the scale of the river and the size of its predators sometimes seem completely out of proportion.
For a fly angler, that combination is part of what makes the upper Sécure such a distinctive experience.
Memorable Moments
When the Forest Fell on the Water
On the final afternoon, a sudden wind swept through sections of the jungle canopy, covering the water with leaves, flowers, and insects.
At El Cañón, an emblematic gorge of deep, quiet water upstream from the lodge, the pacú responded with their usual opportunism.
A silent canoe and the coordinated work of the three guides involved gave Jared and Preston the chance to connect with three large pacú, those unmistakable dark shapes whose power can quickly take an angler into the backing.
Only one made it all the way to the bank.
The other two became something different: shaking hands, unfinished stories, and the kind of missed opportunities that tend to leave one particular thought behind.
There should probably be a next visit.
Looking Ahead
Clear water, intimate streams, dorado that seemed too large for their surroundings, and pacú feeding beneath a surface covered by pieces of the forest.
But Week 12 also unfolded through long conversations and a shared curiosity about the Amazon and its people.
Sometimes the river provides the trophy. Sometimes the place itself does.
